FSA for Baby Care: Monitors, Pumps & The "Diaper Rule"
Becoming a new parent is expensive. The good news is that your Healthcare FSA and HSA can cover hundreds of dollars worth of baby gear. The bad news? There are some very confusing exclusions (like diapers) that catch people off guard.
1. High-Tech Baby Monitors
This is the best-kept secret for new parents. Smart monitors that track breathing and heart rate are considered medical devices by the IRS.
- Owlet Dream Sock: Eligible.
- Nanit Pro: Eligible (Breathing wear included).
- Standard Monitors: (Video only) are generally not eligible unless prescribed for a specific medical condition.
2. Breastfeeding & Postpartum
Almost everything related to lactation is 100% eligible.
- Breast Pumps (Electric & Manual)
- Storage Bags & Bottles
- Nursing Pads & Creams
- Postpartum Recovery (Ice packs, peri bottles)
3. The "Diaper Rule" (Warning)
This is the most common denied claim. Standard diapers and baby wipes are considered "General Health" and are NOT eligible.
The Exception: Diapers are only eligible for older children with a specific medical diagnosis (like incontinence or bedwetting). You cannot use FSA funds for normal infant diapering.
4. Medicine Cabinet Essentials
Stock up on these eligible OTC items:
- Baby Sunscreen: Must be SPF 15+.
- Thermometers: Ear and rectal.
- Nasal Aspirators: The "NoseFrida" is eligible.
- Diaper Rash Cream: Eligible (e.g., Desitin, Aquaphor).
