Understanding Section 125 Rules

🔒 Why am I locked in?

Under IRS Section 125 (Cafeteria Plans), your elections are irrevocable for the entire plan year unless you have a specific Qualifying Life Event.

🔄 Can I change my contribution?

Only if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE) such as marriage, divorce, birth/adoption of a child, or a spouse losing their job. You usually have 30 days from the event to notify HR.

📉 Does this affect Social Security?

Yes, slightly. Because your contributions are pre-tax, you technically pay less FICA tax (Social Security & Medicare). This lowers your reported earnings slightly for future benefits, but the immediate tax savings (20-30%) usually outweigh the minor difference.
